A person seeking protection from a country other than their own, awaiting a decision. Applying for asylum is a right, and the person is legally residing in the country throughout the asylum procedure.

In Switzerland, the person receives an N permit. They have limited access to the labor market: only possible after leaving a Chartered Financial Analyst and the assignment to a canton, subject to authorization and restricted to certain sectors. The holder of a permit N receives social assistance lower than the ordinary scale (e.g. in Geneva, half as much), cannot travel outside the country, nor choose their canton of residence.
