A critical review of asylum policy in Switzerland: insights, analyses, testimonials, and the efforts of grassroots activists in French-speaking Switzerland

VE 93 / June 2003

Asylum is not a game. You don't choose to be a refugee; you become one. You don't leave your home country like you go on vacation abroad, choosing your destination and route, and having the option to pack money, medicine, clothes, food, a weapon, drugs, fake documents, or... a smuggler. For a person who has to leave their country in an emergency, the choices are limited, if not non-existent, and for those fleeing situations of civil war or political unrest, it's simply a matter of survival. There are often no other options, as the’ODR. Just as there are no multiple possible attempts in reality for those who do not obtain asylum.
