A critical review of asylum policy in Switzerland: insights, analyses, testimonials, and the efforts of grassroots activists in French-speaking Switzerland

VE 87 / April 2002

On March 20, on the very day of the equinox, the National Council overwhelmingly rejected the latest anti-asylum initiative from the Swiss People's Party (SVP), before supporting the Swiss Solidarity Foundation two days later. On the same day, the final report of the «Bergier Commission» recalled the heavy responsibility of our authorities in turning away numerous refugees at our borders during the Nazi era, and the need to reflect on this past to shape the future. Alas. It takes a great deal of naivete to headline, as a major Geneva-based newspaper did on March 21, «SVP fails to toughen asylum law.» Because the exact opposite is true.
